More Than Bread Devotional for 5/1/12

3 For I was envious of the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

For they have no pangs until death;
their bodies are fat and sleek.
They are not in trouble as others are;
they are not stricken like the rest of mankind.  – Psalm 73:3-5

I was reading this and realized that the psalmist would not have said such things if he were alive today.  His perception that the wealthy folks who did evil did not get any trouble for it has been shattered in our modern society by a glut of reality shows and celebrity gossip that makes it abundantly clear that they do in fact have problems.  Actually, I wouldn’t want any of their problems at all.  I guess in that sense, verse 5 is still very much true.  Their problems aren’t like everyone else; they might be worse.  And if they don’t live in Christ, the problems don’t even stop with the grave.  At least you and I have that hope.  When the shadows of this life have gone, they will give way to a land where joy will never end.
