17 Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him. – Mark 12:17
Jesus had been asked about paying taxes to Caesar in the hopes that the religious authorities could trap Him as a rebel against Rome. His answer left them basically speechless. This being tax day and all, it seemed fitting to visit the solution that Jesus gave them. He mentioned the fact that the coins all had Caesar’s likeness on them and so it was fitting to give him his due in that manner. But we bear God’s own image in our person and we are to give Him all of ourselves. We do our bit for “king and country” but we give our all for the true King and his better country.
