1 Now when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.” 2 And Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”
3 But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, 4 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in. – 1 Chronicles 17:1-4
It struck me when I read this that Nathan had spoken too soon to David. He basically told David that it would be great if he built a house of worship for God. That night, God informed Nathan that this simply was not to be. Sometimes we can tell someone information that seems right and good based on what we know at the time. But we should always seek God and His wisdom and insight. To Nathan’s credit, when God showed him that he was in error, he went back to David to give him the word that the Lord had said. Even good things must wait for God’s time.
