12“Yet even now,” declares the LORD,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13and rend your hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the LORD your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
and he relents over disaster.
14Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
for the LORD your God? – Joel 2:12-14
I find that I enjoy reading the prophets more and more. Part of it has to do with my fascination with Hebrew and my attempt to study and learn it, but the main reason is these constant reminders of God’s steadfast and abounding love. I don’t know who started the notion that the God of the OT was vengeful and that the God of the NT is all loving. God didn’t change from one to the next. God has always extended mercy to the very last moment of life. He is calling to all of us to turn from the ways of death and into the way of life. You can count on the Lord’s mercy. He is waiting to give it to you as soon as you call on Him.
