25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and put in place statutes and rules for them at Shechem. 26 And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And he took a large stone and set it up there under the terebinth that was by the sanctuary of the LORD. 27 And Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the LORD that he spoke to us. Therefore it shall be a witness against you, lest you deal falsely with your God.” 28 So Joshua sent the people away, every man to his inheritance. – Joshua 24:25-28
This passage records the seventh memorial set up by either Joshua or the people of Israel in the book of Joshua. Each one served a specific purpose, as a reminder of a commitment made or a blessing given by God. A lot of people make resolutions this time of year as they sense the new year approaching. It is a very natural thing to do. But don’t just make a resolution and leave it at that. Create a reminder that will keep your commitment in front of you at all times. The life of faith will lead us on a journey that sees us grow and change over time. Make markers for the journey that has passed and for the journey yet to come.
