More Than Bread Devotional for 9/27/11

11 The greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.  – Matthew 23:11-12

Humility isn’t a popular idea in our modern culture.  We have entire TV shows dedicated to the pursuit of “greater things” like fame, fortune and notoriety.  I have no doubt that given long enough, we will eventually find ways to elevate even the most menial of tasks and labor into their 15 minutes of fame (unless Dirtiest Jobs already does this), and that might not be bad if it comes from outside.  The verses don’t say that it is wrong to be noticed, just that it should come from without.  Be a servant to others.  Not for the fame or the notoriety, but for the sake of our Master who made Himself of no reputation.  Follow His lead as His disciple.
