More Than Bread Devotional for 9/12/11

12“Yet even now,” declares the LORD,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13and rend your hearts and not your garments.”
Return to the LORD your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
and he relents over disaster.  – Joel 2:12-13

With all of the special memorials yesterday, I thought a lot about the natural inclination we have to run to God in times of disaster and to forget about Him in times of peace and safety.  We see disaster all of the time.  Sometimes we get numb to the visuals and things that we see on the TV almost constantly showing us calamity and trouble.  Oftentimes such events are the only time that some people pay attention to God or the things of God.  Yet, I certainly would hesitate to say that God causes them for this reason.  Joel points out that God prefers to show mercy and grace and invites us to return to Him and find this out firsthand.  He says that God “relents over disaster.”  Do not wait until tragedy strikes to turn your heart to God and live your life in Him.  Return to God before the disaster and He will be your shelter from the storm and the disaster, as you live in Him.
