11“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD,
“when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the LORD.
12They shall wander from sea to sea,
and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the LORD,
but they shall not find it. – Amos 8:11-12
A famine. The very word conjures up barren wastelands and desperate times for all. Amos warned that a famine was coming that didn’t involve the food we eat but rather a famine that makes us appreciate the fact that “man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every wordthat comes from the mouth of the LORD” (Deuteronomy 8:3b). What would you do if all Bibles were taken away? How would you cope if the Word were ripped from your grasp? We cannot imagine such a scenario in our western world of multiple Bibles and translations and such. Yet, Amos predicted exactly this. There will be a time when people will search for the Word of God and they won’t be able to hear it or find it. For that reason it is all the more important that we take the time to hide the Word in our heart.
P.S. I didn’t run a best of Gina devotional today because I am going to do something a little different over this weekend. Over Saturday and Sunday I am going to rerun the devotionals that she published on 9/11 and the one that was written the day of and published on 9/12. These will come out on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
