And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” – Mark 4:41
We had a discussion last week at Bible study about “fearing the Lord” and what that really means. Is it about a scary fear or a reverent fear or something else and so forth. I have to admit that when I read a verse like this, I start to lean to the “scary fear” at least a little bit. The disciples are simply in awe of the power on display here in Jesus’ command to calm the waves. These forces of nature “bow down” to the King of Kings and don’t have any choice in the matter. When He says stop, they don’t ask for “five more minutes,” they STOP! We are not like that very often, and I suppose it is a lack of proper sort of fear that allows us to think it wise to say, “wait a few more minutes” to God sometimes. That is something to think about.
P.S. Sorry for missing a couple of days along the way here in the last week or so. It has been a little crazy around here. Blessings to you who read these devotions.
