More Than Bread Devotional for 6/21/11

28Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29“Many women have done excellently,
but you surpass them all.”
30Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31Give her of the fruit of her hands,
and let her works praise her in the gates.   – Proverbs 31:28-31

I am doing a little bit of a more personal devotional today because today is my wife’s birthday.  There are so many things that remind me how blessed I am to have my wife as a partner in life and ministry.  The importance of a strong marriage is frequently mentioned in the Bible and the marriage relationship is often mentioned as an analogy for our relationship with God.  The picture here of a wife who goes above and beyond and who pours her life into the family has implications for us spiritually as well.  Outside appearances can be deceiving, and smooth talk is still just talk; but the one who fears the Lord and walks in His ways is to be praised.  We will reap the fruits of the life that we live here and now.  Let us live by the Spirit and reap that fruit so that our works will bring praise to God.

P.S.  Happy birthday to my beautiful wife, who has been an example to me of what an excellent wife is all about just like the one in this passage.  I am blessed to spend my life alongside her.  She is a source of encouragement to me as I write these devotionals each week and often gives me feedback that helps me write better as I go.
