More Than Bread Devotional for 6/14/11

8 Hear, O my people, while I admonish you!
O Israel, if you would but listen to me!
9There shall be no strange god among you;
you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
10 I am the LORD your God,
who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.  – Psalm 81:8-10

God redeemed us for relationship with Himself.  He freed us from bondage in sin, just as surely as He freed Israel from bondage in Egypt.  The words of this psalm echo the beginning of the 10 commandments in both Exodus and Deuteronomy.  God calls to us with instruction in the midst of covenant and promises to take care of us.  When we keep God first and foremost in our life, we are able to rest in his ways instead of panicking in our own ways.  Much of our trouble stems from placing other things ahead of God in our life and seeking to do things our own way instead of His.  God calls to us, to hear His voice and follow His ways.  Let us listen to Him today.
