More Than Bread Devotional for 6/13/11

13Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen and silk and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour and honey and oil. You grew exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty. 14And your renown went forth among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I had bestowed on you, declares the Lord GOD. 15 “But you trusted in your beauty and played the whore because of your renown and lavished your whorings on any passerby; your beauty became his.  – Ezekiel 16:13-15

This might seem like a strange passage for a devotional, but hear me out.  Ezekiel is reminding Israel that God took them from nothing and made them His very own people.  He is using the analogy of a husband and wife primarily, but his point is that God made Israel into something lovely.  God was the source of all that was good for Israel, but they forgot the source and imagined that they themselves had done these things that made the other nations look to them.

This applies to us as well.  We have nothing that wasn’t given to us by God.  He is the source of all good in our lives.  Let us not forget or think that we have done these things ourselves.  We were bought with a price, the blood of Jesus Christ.  We belong to Him and cannot give ourselves to any other.
