8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9What you have learned andreceived and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. – Philippians 4:8-9
These words of Paul seem harder and harder as I look around me. It seems like there is much that is untrue, dishonorable, unjust, impure, ugly, and I think you get the picture; that I don’t even know where to look at all sometimes. Yet, I have discovered that the true, honorable, just, pure and lovely and so forth are out there to be seen; it’s just that we often have to look harder for those things than for the others. Hey, no one ever said that the Christian life would be easy; and if you happen to have heard that somewhere, I am sorry to report that the person who said it was lying to you.
The Christian life isn’t an easy road. If it was easy, everyone would do it, as Tom Hanks character said in A League of Their Own. He had a point. Our Lord promised persecution, hardship and yes, trouble. So look hard for those things that are excellent and praiseworthy and think about such things.
