4But I have said these things to you, that whentheir hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.” – John 16:4
There are two things that stick out to me when I read this verse. First, Jesus knew what He was talking about and the things that He said would and did come true. This is a stark contrast to many who gain a following making predictions that fail to come true (with a recent notable one in the news right now). What Jesus has said will come to pass, you can count on. The second thing I noticed though is Jesus’ reason for not having told the disciples these things earlier. He didn’t tell them all of this sooner because He was with them.
Jesus knew that His time was short on earth and that the next hours and days would be a great challenge to the disciples as well. He had waited to share these things until that time so as to avoid overwhelming them and because it was unnecessary to do so before then. Jesus had a sense of timing even during His earthly ministry. We can be sure that God’s sense of timing is no less key in our lives as well. God will tell us what we need to hear, when we need to hear it. Listen for His voice today and everyday.
