1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
I shared these verses at the baccalaureate service last night here in Langdon. These are some of my favorite verse in all of the Bible. There are so many times we it is easy for us to get discouraged and want to give up. But this passage talks about a cloud of witnesses, the heroes from Ch. 11 along with the saints who have lived since, who literally are encouraging us as we run this race called life. Jesus is both our model and the prize for which we run. Keep your eyes on the prize, and when you start to feel weighed down, listen for the cheers from the gallery that are urging you to press on. They are there, but sometimes we only hear them in the stillness and quiet and not as much in the hustle and bustle.
