29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. – Matthew 10:29-30
I heard a story that is an interesting parallel to Jesus’ words here in Matthew. The story is about a Jewish rabbi who went into hiding in a cave with his son during one of the Roman persecutions that took place after the Temple was destroyed. He went out one day and saw some men who were hunting birds. According to the story, he heard a voice from heaven that would say “mercy” and the bird would escape and then he would hear a voice that said “captured” or the “pain of death” and the bird would be captured. The rabbi reasoned that if God decided the fates of even these little birds, then he could entrust God with his own fate regarding the Romans.
Of course, Jesus had already made the same observation for us as well. We can certainly trust that the God of all Creation, Who even keeps an eye on the birds, will be watching over you and me.
