More Than Bread Devotional for 3/17/11

17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.  – 1 Peter 3:17

Let’s be real honest for a moment.  I don’t like to suffer at all.  I would guess that you are probably of the same mind as me, but we see over and over again in Scripture that we will encounter persecution and suffering in this world.  Part of that is due to sin, part of it is something God uses to makes us what He wasn’t us to be and some of it may come from evil in the world itself.

Peter gives us the perspective that it is better to suffer unjustly than to get our just desserts if you will.  This is another of those seemingly counter-intuitive statements in Scripture.  Like I said, we don’t want to suffer at all, but to suffer when we don’t think we deserve it just doesn’t seem fair.  Jesus did exactly that though and He did it for you.  When we remember that, we can take Peter’s perspective as well.
