So you shall remember and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God: I am the LORD your God. – Numbers 15:40-41
This refrain, or something similar to it, is repeated over and over again throughout the Exodus story and beyond. It carries an important truth for each of us as well. God has freed us from slavery as well, slavery to our own sin; and He didn’t free us with the intention of seeing us run back to Egypt (sin) at our earliest opportunity. He freed us so we could be His people and He would be our God. All that God asks of us comes in the frame of this relationship that He has gone out of His way to establish and maintain. He brought us out of slavery first at great cost to Himself, and in the safe confines of that relationship He makes His ways known to us through His commandments. If we love Him, we keep His commandments and abide in the relationship as we do(John 15:10). Show your love for Him to others and let your light shine before men.
