More Than Bread Devotional for 2/9/11

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.  – Luke 6:40

I want to expand on the point from yesterday’s devotional about being perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.  This statement in Luke’s gospel comes from a chapter that has very similar content to Matthew 5 that we looked at yesterday.  In Luke, the passage reads to “be merciful even as your Father is merciful,” so you can see the idea is present here as well.  We are to emulate the pattern of life that God has set out for us.  Jesus tells us that a disciple who is “fully trained” will be like his teacher.  It makes me think of the old commercials that tried to encourage people to “be like Mike.”  While I am sure Michael Jordan is a nice guy, he isn’t the one I want to be like.  I would rather be like Jesus, so I’m going to keep training in His way. (1 Timothy 4:6-10)
