16Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
I have to admit that I partly picked this verse because I wanted to include a “shadow” reference on Groundhog Day, and like the movie of that same name, I want to mention a little something about unchange (which isn’t a word, but I am using it anyway).
I really love the old hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” I have fond memories of singing it in chapel back at John Brown University on many occasions and I like the many Scriptural references evoked in the lyrics. One of them says, “there is no shadow of turning with Thee,” and it is a reminder of God’s unchanging nature. I think the reason this is so comforting is because we live with change almost constantly. Change isn’t necessarily bad, as I am sure a lot of people are looking forward to a “change” from winter to summer (speaking of that groundhog again). But it is good to know that we can depend on One who changes not.
