12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
This is Jesus talking about the end times in Matthew 24. I think there are plenty of good reasons for us to be watching and expecting His return soon, but I think this passage speaks to us about something more. It is tough to love people who do things that hurt and offend us. When people behave in a manner that is deliberately wrong, we have a very tough choice. Do we give in to our human nature and seek to retaliate or get even? Or do we follow God’s way and continue to love them and seek to forgive or reconcile if possible? If we take the first path, then we will find ourselves living out the statement in verse 12. Our love will grow cold and we will become bitter. If we take the second path, we will find that God’s grace is sufficient for us, even in the midst of hurt and pain.
